Why an open data plane matters
Nothing between you and the silicon
Forwarding is expressed through the kernel's own bridge and traffic-control models and offloaded to hardware by switchdev. There is no vendor shim holding state you cannot inspect.
Standard tooling, no new CLI
Configure with ip, bridge, and tc. Automate it with the configuration management you already run. Nobody has to learn a proprietary syntax to close a port.
Lifecycle you control
Because the drivers are upstream rather than out-of-tree, kernel updates are a maintenance task instead of a vendor dependency, which matters most on the deployments that outlive their purchase order.
Same policy plane as the rest of Rover
Segmentation, telemetry, and identity-aware access follow the same model used on Rover routers and RapidSTACK gateways, so a wired port is not a policy exception.
